This Week in Tech, Sept. 21th-25th

A few standouts to me this week include an update to Blackmagic Design’s 12K camera, Samsung’s new 5G-capable S20 FE phone, and Canon’s new cinema camera, the C70.

Blackmagic Design Updates Ursa Mini Pro 12K

Seen in the video above is the CEO of Blackmagic Design, Grant Petty, giving an update to the URSA Mini Pro 12K two months ago about its high-resolutions and functionality.

Oddly enough, Blackmagic Design has not even released the 12K URSA Mini Pro, but they decided to add firmware support for higher frame rates, Blackmagic RAW, and ability to connect power and control cine-servo zoom lenses this week.

Samsung makes a ‘Fan Edition’ of their Galaxy S20

Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE)

Taking cues from their popular Galxay S20 series, Samsung says their newest phone, the S20 FE, bridges the gap of the higher-end Note series, with a moderate price of $699, or $249.99 with eligible trade-in.

The S20 FE has more professional functions such as the, ‘Super smooth scrolling display, an AI-powered camera, advanced chipset, hyper-fast connectivity, all day battery1, expandable storage2, with a streamlined premium design.’ (1)

A standout feature for photographer’s is the S20 FE’s larger image sensor, which will produce more dynamic colors and perform better in low-light conditions with its, ‘Night mode.’

“We are constantly speaking to our fans and taking feedback, and we heard what they loved the most about our Galaxy S20 series, what features they used most often and what they would want to see in a new smartphone,”

-Dr. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business for Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s S20 FE comes in a variety of colors hand-picked by consumers: Cloud Red, Cloud Orange, Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, Cloud Navy and Cloud White.

The S20 FE’s triple rear cameras ranging from wide to telephoto, and its 30X Space Zoom captures details from a distance.

For high-resolution portraits, the S20 FE takes 32MP selfies with its front-facing camera, easily viewed on the 6.5″ FHD Infinity-O Display.

Blazing-fast 5G connectivity promises un-interrupted mobile gameplay and crystal-clear voice calls, alongside the 6GB of ram for hyper-fast processing.

To power the S20 FE is a 4500mAh battery, suitable for all-day phone operation, protected from splashes with by its IP68 rating for water and dust-resistance.

Canon Releases First RF Mount Cinema Camera

1st EOS Cinema Camera with Canon RF Mount

Canon’s first RF mount cinema camera, the EOS C70, has a mixed-bag of reactions from the filmmaking community, but its $5499.99 price tag might change people’s opinion.

Despite its unusual appearance, the C70 is a high-performing cinema camera with a Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) sensor capable of recording 16+ stops of Dynamic Range in 4K DCI up to 120 fps in 10-bit 4:2:2.

The C70 features a DIGIC DV7 Image Processor which according to Canon,

“Collects the extensive information captured from the DGO sensor and processes it into exceptional HDR imagery while offering choices between Canon Log 2 and 3, in addition to PQ and HLG gamma functionality.” (2)

Inherited from previous cinema cameras is Canon’s, ‘Dual-Pixel’ auto-focus system, enhanced with AI functionality via EOS iTR AF X autofocus for better object-tracking.

The EOS C70 supports resolutions up to 4K DCI or UHD up to 120fps and 2K DCI or HD up to 180 fps, while outputting 4K 4:2:2 10-Bit via the full-sized HDMI port.

Practical additions to the camera include two built-in Mini XLR inputs, a time-code input/output terminal, and a built-in stereo microphone.

At the time of its announcement, there is no RAW video recording support to its two SD card slots, but I imagine there will be a future firmware update proving RAW support.

To offset the crop-factor from the EOS C70’s Super 35mm sensor when using full-frame lenses, Canon created the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x to achieve the full field-of-view.
