This week, Sony releases the a7c, a compact full-frame camera, GoPro announces their new HERO9 Black, two NIKKOR lenses are released for the Z mount series cameras, Samy’s camera turns 44-years-old, and Blackmagic Design updates their video-editing software, DaVinci Resolve.

Sony a7c, Full-Frame Sensor in a APS-C Body

New Entry-Level Full-Frame Option for Travelers and Vloggers

The Sony a7c (model ILCE-7C) is small full-frame mirrorless camera, claimed as the smallest, and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera on the market, scheduled for release in October 2020 for a MSRP of $1,798.00.

Sony is using their 24.2MP back-illuminated full-frame Exmor R CMOS, which boosts an ISO range of 100-51200 (expandable to 50-204800), 15-stops of dynamic range, and 4K video capabilities.

New material construction and design make the a7c so compact, “The Alpha 7C achieves the world’s smallest and lightest compact body through upgraded 5-axis in-body stabilization and shutter units, and the utilization of magnesium alloy monocoque construction, often used in the bodies of cars and aircraft”(1).

The a7c is 4.9 inches x 2.8 inches x 2.2 inches (124.0mm x 71.1mm x 59.7mm) and weighs only 18oz (509g), only 1 precent more weight than the Alpha 6600.

Unique to the a7c is a memory card slot is near the I/O on the left-side of the camera, and a side-opening LCD touchscreen.

An all-new light-weight zoom lens, the FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 lens (model SEL2860), can be purchased as a kit with the a7c for $2,098.00; along with a new lens, Sony releases a compact-style off-camera flash unit, the HVL-F28RM.

GoPro HERO9 Black Delivers Many Pro Features

Implementing a brand new 5K sensor that shoots 5K Video (7X the resolution of HD) and 20MP Photos, the HERO9 Black improved their flagship model, available for a MSRP of $449.99 or $349.98 with a one-year GoPro subscription (existing GoPro subscribers receive $100 off the HERO9 Black).

Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S

Nikon’s Widest and Fastest Ultra-Wide Z Mount Lens

Architecture and landscape photographers will love the wide field-of-view and fast aperture in the new, NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S, which retails for $2,399.95 in the United States.

According to Nikon, “It is the world’s shortest and lightest lens in its class, with a length of approximately 124.5 mm and a weight of approximately 650 g. The NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is the perfect lens for a wide variety of landscapes, from starry skies and mountain scenes to cityscapes”(1).

The NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is nearly 35% lighter than its predecessor, the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8, and is shorter in length than its DSLR counterpart.

 

   

 

NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S

The Perfect Lens for Portraits and Night Photography

The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S prime lens is a beautiful piece of engineering, with outstanding low-light performance and pleasing bokeh for portrait photography.

The lens design allows it to capture, “Beautiful bokeh of a shallow depth of field to realize a clear sense of perspective, while achieving the f/1.2 maximum aperture”(2).

Unique to the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S is the implementation of a stepping motor (STM), which will greatly improve auto-focus smoothness when recording video.
