‘The Biggest Firmware Upgrade in the History of the GFX System,’ according to FUJIFILM

FUJIFILM North America Corporation announced the release of their newest firmware update for the GFX digital camera system on June 30, 2020, promising upgrades such as 12-bit raw 4K video over HDMI, improvements to autofocus, and better imaging.

The new firmware upgrade for the FUJIFILM GFX 50S, GFX 50R, and GFX100 includes enhanced image reproduction, improved auto-focus performance, expanded tethered-shooting functionality, drone/gimbal control, and raw video output.

Film Simulation

FUJIFILM has increased their Film Simulation modes within the GFX lineup, adding ‘CLASSIC Neg’ to all three cameras, ‘ETERNA Bleach Bypass’ and ‘Color Chrome Blue’ to the GFX100, and ‘ETERNA’ mode for the GFX 50S and GFX 50R.

The ‘ETERNA’ film simulation, which emulates the colors and dynamic range of motion picture film, will benefit from the RAW video recording capability.

Lastly, the ‘Smooth Skin Effect,’ which smooths the appearance of human skin for portraiture, will be added to the GFX 50S and GFX 50R.

Autofocus Upgrades

The GFX100 will be able to autofocus using phase-detection in low-light conditions down to -5EV, and the GFX 50S and GFX 50R will adopt Low Light Priority AF-S mode, for more reliable autofocus in low-light.

“In general, it is unfavorable for larger sensor to achieve autofocus. But, this theory does not match GFX anymore.”1

Makoto Oishi – Product Planner, Fujifilm

Each GFX camera will receive enhanced Face/Eye autofocus performance, which will result in more accurate face recognition in groups of people and portraits.

Remote Shooting

No longer are you stuck to changing the exposure settings from the camera body, the new firmware allows users to adjust exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture value, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation) from a computer when shooting stills.

Internal photo rating system transfers over to computer photo-editing software, such as Adobe Lightroom.

  • Film Simulation modes – ‘ETERNA’ motion picture ‘film look’

  • Face/Eye autofocus more accurate and faster

  • Remote camera adjustments when tethered

  • Start/stop, exposure adjustments via gimbals/drone

  • 4K Raw Video Over HDMI

Gimbal and Drone Functionality

With the firmware update, the GFX100 can be triggered to record, adjust exposure values, and focus with compatible gimbals and drones.

Raw Video Sent to External Recorder

Another feature made available with firmware, the GFX100 can output 4K/29.97P 12bit RAW video over HDMI to an ATOMOS NINJA V, in the Apple ProRes RAW codec.

“The look of large format video has become very popular because the combination of longer focal lengths and the camera sensor’s physical size can create an incredibly pleasing image with shallow depth of field and incredible compression.” said Victor Ha, senior director of marketing and product management in FUJIFILM North America Corporation’s Electronic Imaging Division.

New firmware to make NINJA V work with the GFX100 will be released by ATOMOS in July.

Lastly, film simulations such as F-Log and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) can be used when outputting RAW video.
