Use your Canon DSLR as a Webcam

On April 28, 2020, Canon U.S.A., Inc. released, ‘EOS Webcam Utility Beta,’ a free software download which enables specific EOS and PowerShot cameras to function as webcam on a PC with a USB cable.

A month later, after much demand from the public, Canon has released EOS Webcam Utility Beta software for Macintosh computers, “After tens of thousands of downloads and comments from Canon brand loyalists, the EOS Webcam Utility Beta software has expanded, and is now available for macOS users”(2).

According to Canon, the EOS Webcam Utility Beta software, ‘converts a compatible Canon camera into a webcam through a simple USB connection’(2).

In the initial press release from Canon, Executive Vice President, Tatsuro Kano, confirmed its release was a response to the COVID-19 web conferencing,

“Our goal is that the EOS Webcam Utility Beta software can help reduce some of the remote workday stress for employees who are tasked with video conferencing and virtual meetings” (1).

In my opinion, this is a long overdue feature, and is a representation of Canon’s unwillingness to release features that are already built-in to their products, although I am happy that Canon created this software, but am frustrated it took this long.
